South-West based, communicator, photographer & storyteller.

Hi, I am Emily.

I am a Communications Assistant based in Cornwall, with specialist experience working for infrastructure and strategic organisations within the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Sector. The thematic areas within the VCSE that I am most passionate about include nature & environment, food access, women’s aid, EDI, food access and grassroots (essentially anything related to the UN SDGs). Using my scientific background, I most enjoy turning quantitative research into informative content and compelling stories accessible to all.

I am open to freelance work to offer support to your business or organisation by:

  • Offering advice and support to improve your organisations internal communications.

  • Creating and editing media for your organisation/event/campaign (inc. copywriting, photography and videography)

  • Assisting and Supporting the creation, implementation and evaluation of social media Campaigns.

  • Developing and implementing a strategy for your organisations’ external communications and outreach

You can also find my latest work and nature-y stuff on social media under the handle X: @anemone_em / Instagram: @anemone.em (the name is an ode to this one kid in primary school that refused to say my name right - thanks a lot Nick).

I am open to Freelance work. Check out my Showreel and previous projects.

Background & Education

When I was little I loved watching TV shows like ‘ROAR’ and ‘Deadly 60”. I am ashamed to say that after watching the cinematic that is masterpiece ‘Nim’s Island’ (sarcasm) I decided that, like many others, I wanted to become a marine biologist (*Spoiler* I am not one). I moved to Cornwall for my undergraduate degree at University of Exeter and continued towards my goal of becoming researcher to my Master’s in Evolutionary and Behavioural Ecology at Exeter. During which, I was fortunate enough to travel to Iceland as part of my field work monitoring Brent goose behaviour.

During my academic journey I discovered that I enjoyed my projects and assessments where we got to translate science into content that was informative but also fun at times, which led me to Communications. I sought out my previous position as a Communications Assistant at the Cornwall Voluntary Sector Forum (Cornwall VSF) to gain further content creation and stakeholder engagement experience, beyond student societies, to broaden my skill set. Working across the VCSE sector, I have found that my favourite thematic areas are nature & environment, food access, women’s aid and Equality Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), and I enjoy working within these project areas.
